Research

The Department of Pediatrics at The University of Texas Medical School at Houston strives to improve the welfare of children by advancing basic and clinical science related to the development and health of infants and children.

Our department has over 120 faculty members involved in a variety of academic pursuits. Departmental research programs span the spectrum from developmental biology to behavioral research and epidemiology. Research in the Department is supported by over $39 million in extramural funding.

The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston was one of only 12 universities to be awarded an NIH Clinical and Translational Science Awards (http://www.ccts.uth.tmc.edu) in 2006. This award provides NIH funding for interdisciplinary approaches that efficiently move scientific advances from the laboratory into clinical practice and into the community. The programs and infrastructure supported by this Award provide an outstanding environment for clinical and translational research endeavors in the Department. The Department's close association with the Medical School's Center for Clinical Research and Evidence-based Medicine provides access to an in-depth curriculum in clinical research methods for faculty and fellows. This program is specifically designed to train clinical investigators and is organized to accommodate the schedules of busy clinicians.

In addition to department research programs that are organized along traditional subspecialty division lines (listed to the right), a number of areas of collaborative research emphasis have been developed in the department:
