Pulmonary Biology
The Department of Pediatrics at The University of Texas Medical School at Houston strives to improve the welfare of children by advancing basic and clinical science related to the development and health of infants and children.
Investigators from the Divisions of Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine, Pulmonology and Critical Care Medicine are looking at gene-environment interaction in the development of childhood asthma, especially the role of lung inflammation in long term lung dysfunction. These laboratories are using in vivo and in vitro models to characterize lung cells and cell products involved in lung inflammatory responses to various noxious stimuli such as RSV, meconium, milk, and pollution. These investigators are also studying the role of surfactant protein homeostasis in lung injury.
