This page is designed to provide information on the research study conducted by Dr. Jacqueline T. Hecht and her associates, and to provide a way for families who are affected by clubfoot to participate in the study.

The clubfoot study began in 1997 in order to understand the cause or causes of isolated clubfoot.  Isolated clubfoot occurs in one out of every 1,000 newborns.  Babies require immediate medical care to obtain good foot correction.  Evan after casting and surgery many individuals have smaller feet and legs as a result of clubfoot.  Clubfoot occurs twice as frequent in males and can occur in one foot or both feet.  We are particularly interested in families where clubfoot has occurred in more than one individual.  Studies suggest that both genetic factors (heredity) and environmental factors play important roles.  This study is focusing on genetic and environmental factors that cause clubfoot.  This may allow us to modify the environment and develop new treatments.
