Gastroenterology Fellowship
PURPOSE:
In this three-year fellowship, the fellow will acquire skills in clinical pediatric gastroenterology, teaching, research, and administration. One year will be dedicated to clinical training (half in-patient, half out-patine). Two years will be directed to research. The fellow has a choice of developing expertise in clinical or basic science research, but all fellows will develop expertise in patient care and gastrointestinal procedures. The fellowship director is Dr. Marc Rhoads, who is Board-certified in Pediatric Gastroenterology. The fellowship is accredited by the ACGME and the American Board of Pediatrics. II. REQUIREMENTS:
A. U.S. citizenship.
B. Completion of an approved 3 year Pediatrics, 4 year Medicine/Pediatrics.
C. A passing score on the American Board of Pediatrics’ Pediatric Board Examination if this examination was completed prior to the starting date for the fellowship.
III. SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES:
- Training and direct experience in the delivery of medical care to pediatric gastroenterolgy and hepatology patients in inpatient and outpatient settings.
- Experience in the organization and management of clinical programs and services; and knowledge and experience in managing outpatients with complex gastrointestinal problems, such as immunosuppression for patients with inflammatory bowel disease, enteral feeding, parenteral nutrition, and liver transplants.
- Training and clinical experience in gastroenterologic procedures, including upper and lower endoscopy, liver biopsy, breath hydrogen analysis, esophageal pH and impedance probe monitoring, rectal biopsy, and percutaneous gastrostomy tube placment.
- Training and experience in the teaching of Pediatric Gastroenterology to medical students and residents.
- The opportunity to design, execute, and analyze at least one research project in Pediatric Gastroenterology.
- Completion of at least one manuscript to submit for publication.
