Adolescent Medicine
Welcome to the Adolescent Medicine webpage. We provide state-of-the art medical care for adolescents; train medical students, residents, and fellows; and pursue research in various aspects of adolescent health.
Clinical and research interests of our faculty include
- Effective ways of teaching medical students and residents about the care of adolescents.
- sexually transmitted diseases in adolescents, and various aspects of the health of incarcerated youth.
- culturally competent care of adolescents, adolescent sexuality, and optimizing clinical care for adolescents.
- the prevention and treatment of obesity.
We have an accredited, three-year fellowship program in which the fellow gains competence in clinical care, research, and teaching. Fellows attend the University of Texas School of Public Health, obtaining the degree of Master of Public Health (MPH). Please see the departmental Fellowship page.
Clinical activities are centered mainly at outpatient sites in the community, although adolescent clinics are in place at both Children's Memorial Hermann Hospital and LBJ Hospital. We have daily clinics at the Harris County Juvenile Detention Center and are involved in a mobile clinic for homeless youth. Other sites include the Student Health and Sports Medicine Clinics at the University of Houston.
Pediatric and Medicine-Pediatric residents spend a month rotating through these facilities.
